TromaDance New Mexico update!
8/19/2004
The TromaDance spirit continues to grow…
Inspired by the original TromaDance (held in Park City, Utah, every January) and the satellite TromaDances which have been started in Winnipeg and Portland, Kurly Tlapoyawa of Burning Paradise Video, Albuquerque’s only cult/alternative/trash video store, has teamed up with Troma Entertainment to bring you “Burning Paradise Presents: TromaDance New Mexico,” a two day film festival dedicated to independent film. Scheduled to play the Guild Theatre on October 23 and 24, TromaDance Nex Mexico will feature dozens of new films.
Kurly checked in with us, concerning a recent potential snag with the festival…
Hope your family is doing well, and that your trip to China was enjoyable. Thanks for the heads-up on Flavia. We have put together a great team of volunteers and it looks like the film festival will be a hit.
We met with the state film commission last week to see if they wanted to help us out in any way, and they basically told us that independent filmmakers could go fuck themselves. They wouldn’t even buy a $30 ad in our program guide, because then they would “have to buy ads in ALL the local film festival programs.” Shouldn’t they anyway? Oh well.
I am also taping a documentary on putting together your own film festival. Bill Richardson is putting on his own film festival “the Governors Cup” and it was originally scheduled to occur on the SAME weekend as TDance NM. When they found out, they told us that “your dates might not work, because we are having a festival that weekend.” I told them that going head to head with the Gov. would be great and that we were all for it. Next thing I know, they MOVE their film festival ahead by a week! Ha Ha!
Stink of Flesh had four sell-out shows over the weekend, so we are planning a special encore screening for this Saturday at Midnight. I look forward to hearing your take on our little film.
Thank You,
Kurly Tlapoyawa
